Research involving human participants requires appropriate ethics and site approvals before it is described as approved or active. Internal review does not replace legally required external approval.

IN DEPTH

Controls across a research project

Governance should be visible in decisions and records, not only in policy titles.

01

Before research

Document protocol, roles, conflicts, data plan and approvals appropriate to the activity.

02

During research

Keep an auditable record of collection, changes, quality checks and any reported concern.

03

At publication

Review attribution, sources, limitations, privacy, corrections and access conditions before release.

PRACTICAL DETAIL

Public trust in a research output

A reader should be able to see who did the work, how it was reviewed and how concerns are addressed.

01

Authorship

Record substantive contributions and approve the final author list before release.

02

Limitations

Report uncertainty, missing data, study constraints and any interests relevant to interpretation.

03

After release

Keep a visible route for questions, corrections and, when necessary, a linked retraction notice.
